The IOC, in its infinite wisdom and glory (and allegedly payoffs), as of 2016, recognizes a lot of sports as being organized and internationally competitive enough to be worthy of IOC recognition. Many of these sports are part of the Olympic program, but there are 35 sports (or groups of sports) that are IOC recognized, but not currently represented on the program. Here are 12 questions about these families of sports (some more general than others) that the IOC recognizes, and may yet one day make it to the Olympics (provided that the Olympics exist after Rio ... who knows??)

This sport was on the program at five Olympics between 1900 and 1936. Each team consists of four players playing positions generally numbered 1-4. The game is divided into four or eight 7-minute periods called chukkas. Originating in the Persian Empire (or thereabouts), it is generally played on a field that is roughly 300 yards by 160 yards. What is this sport which generally sees the best player on the team playing the #3 position.
"Boules" is the general international term for a family of ball games. In the United States this variation of boules is the most popular. This game descends from the Roman Empire, and remains popular among Adriatic nations (and with seniors in the U.S.). Name this sport that is generally played on a court that is 90 feet by 10 feet (27 meters by 3 meters), the object of which is to target a small ball called the jack or pallino?
This family of sports sees separate competitions on foot, on skis, in canoes, with radios, and in alpine settings. What is the general term for these navigation based sports which originated in 19th century Sweden, which see people race to find orange and white flags at control points.
Pelota vasca is a small family of ball games, one version of which was played at the 1900 Olympics, and has occasionally appeared as a demonstration sport, most recently in 1992. While not very popular in the United States, this variant of pelota vasca has been regionally popular in the US for almost a century. This game is played on a 36 by 54 meter court, and is likely most famous for the xistera worn by competitors. Identify this game, known as zesta punta in Basque, which claims ball speeds of almost 200 miles/hr, making it one of the fastest moving ball games in the world.
Two word answer needed. My friends who are ballroom dancers were very excited when dancesport was elevated by the IOC in 1997. I wasn't too excited. Within dancesport, choreography can vary from team to team, except in this particular dance. In this dance, the international syllabus restricts couples to moves that include contra checks, left whisks, and fleckerls. Identify this oldest form of ballroom dance, which references a Central European city where it originated in the late 18th century. Remember: two word answer needed.
This game is defined as a sport in Spain, but you likely wouldn't see that designation in most other countries, though it was on the program of the 2006 and 2010 Asian Games. This game originated in India in the 6th century from a predecessor game called chaturaá¹…ga (four divisions). Howard Staunton organized the first modern tournament in 1851, and standardized the shapes of the pieces still used today. Name this competition that is governed today by FIDE which rates players based on a system called the Elo System.
Cue sports or billiards, as a family of games, are IOC recognized, and while it did not make the final list, the governing body for billiards put this variation of billiards up to be considered for the 2020 Olympics. What is this variation of billiards, generally played on an 11 foot table, with a cue ball, 15 red balls, and six balls usually black, pink, blue, brown, green, and yellow in color.
Originally called "Russian hockey", the modern version of this winter game originated in Britain. While in most respects it resembles ice hockey, this game differs by putting 11 players on the ice for each team, denying a stick to the goalie, using a ball instead of a puck, and playing on a surface much larger than an ice hockey rink (about 100 by 50 meters). Name this winter sport, supposedly only second among winter sports to ice hockey in terms of international participants in the world, even though US participation is very small outside of Minnesota.
This sport was in the Olympics from 1900 to 1920 until it was permanently replaced by weightlifting, and remains a part of the World Games (the Olympics for sports that have been excluded from the Olympics). It was a major US collegiate sport until football caught on in the 1880s. In this sport, "locking", when a competitors elbows are lower than their knees, is considered a foul. Identify this sport, generally contested by two teams of 8 competitors, and has led to occasional amputations because of improper rope or other lines which can snap and sever fingers and limbs which the competitor may be tempted to wrap around body parts to increase grip.
The "Duplicate" variation of which card game is the only IOC recognized card competition? A major championship in this sport is the Bermuda Bowl, held every two years since 1950, though only three times actually in Bermuda. Name this game, supposedly descended from a game called "Russian whist", this game's modern development was pushed by Harold S. Vanderbilt, and in the 1940s was the most popular team card game in the United States.
In 1964, Don Carter, a participant in this sport, became the first athlete in US history to sign a US$1 million endorsement contract. Because of this sport's popularity in parts of Asia, particularly in Japan, it was a finalist to make it on the program for the 2020 Olympics (but didn't make it). One of the major technological breakthroughs in this sport are machines which can lay down uniform oil patterns on the surface of play, though some have complained that this has made the game too easy. One of the few international sports to be headquartered in the United States (Arlington, Texas), identify this sport that will have to wait at least until 2024 for a chance to award Olympic medals, supposedly the most popular organized sport in the world to never have been part of any Olympics.
This sport is a bit unusual in that it is usually played by either teams of 8 females, or teams of 4 males and 4 females. Invented in the Netherlands in 1902, this game descends from a Swedish game called ringboll, and it was an Olympic demonstration sport in 1920 and 1928. In this game, players are assigned to particular halves of the court (zones) which they cannot leave (and must be male-male/female-female matchups). Players can run within the zone, but cannot advance while in possession of the ball. Identify this game, perhaps the funniest sounding sport in history, that looks a lot like basketball, if the baskets were placed on top of poles located well away from the out of bounds line.
