This game is defined as a sport in Spain, but you likely wouldn't see that designation in most other countries, though it was on the program of the 2006 and 2010 Asian Games. This game originated in India in the 6th century from a predecessor game called chaturaṅga (four divisions). Howard Staunton organized the first modern tournament in 1851, and standardized the shapes of the pieces still used today.
