Questions:

Sum of the parts, part I
I've got some good questions lined up for you. Let's start with this:

Take a certain common English word (arguably more common in the UK than the US). Remove its final four letters and it's pronounced the same as if you hadn't removed the letters. What's the original word?

Click to Reveal Answer
QUEUE (Q) ("lined up"!)

Two letters, part I
What is the only English consonant that can be followed by exactly seven different letters to form a valid two-letter Scrabble word (according to the standard Tournament Word List (TWL) dictionary)?

Click to Reveal Answer
M (MA, ME, MI, MM, MO, MU, MY)

Two letters, part II
Bet you can't name the only English word with three consecutive pairs of repeated letters! If I'm wrong, type it in here:

Click to Reveal Answer
BOOKKEEPER (OO, KK, EE) (take that bet!)

Alphabet games, part I
Provide two words (minimum two letters each) that are pronounced the same as each other but share no letters in common.

Click to Reveal Answer
EWE, YOU (but not YEW); also accepting OH/EAU and SI/CEE

Sum of the parts, part II
CDC? Give a common two-word proper noun containing the letter C three times, each occurrence of which is pronounced differently (at least in standard American English).

Click to Reveal Answer
PACIFIC OCEAN (s, k, ʃ) (William Steig would be proud). Also accepting FAUCI VACCINE, as it fits the CDC clue equally well. Not accepting answers in which the C requires an H in one of the pronunciations

Adding an S, part I
Often, adding an S to the end of an English word turns it from singular to plural.

Identify a word wherein adding an S to the end turns it from plural to singular AND makes it refer to something female rather than something male. (Give the shorter word.)

Click to Reveal Answer
PRINCES (+S = PRINCESS)

Adding an S, part II
Often, adding an S to the end of an English word turns it from singular to plural.

For what English word longer than six letters is the plural formed by inserting an S as the seventh letter? (Give the shorter word.)

Click to Reveal Answer
PASSERBY (+S = PASSERSBY). Also accepting MOTHER-, FATHER-, or SISTER-IN-LAW

Alphabet games, part II
What is the only number that, when written out in English, has its letters in alphabetical order?

Click to Reveal Answer
40 (FORTY)

Sum of the parts, part III
A certain common English noun is derived from a Persian word. The spelling of the word in English contains within it the non-overlapping spellings of two other common nouns, each of which could itself be a participant in an instance of the Persian-derived word.

The two shorter nouns have the same length (in letters, if not feet) and are separated in the longer word by a single vowel.

Provide the Persian-derived word.

Click to Reveal Answer
CARAVAN (CAR + A + VAN) (this is the question, inspired by seeing a Dodge Caravan while walking on a Philadelphia street in November, that inspired this quiz)

Consecutive consonants, part I
Easy as pie: give both English words whose pronunciation (but not necessarily spelling) ends with four consecutive consonant sounds, including voiceless fricatives in the final three positions.

(As an aside: These are two of my favorite words for this reason.)

Click to Reveal Answer
SIXTHS (-ksθs), TWELFTHS (-lfθs) (I'd prefer twelve sixths of pie to six twelfths)

Consecutive consonants, part II
What English word is written (though not necessarily pronounced) with six consecutive consonants? Hasbro opted for a slightly different spelling in their product with a very similar name.

Click to Reveal Answer
CATCHPHRASE (TCHPHR) (the game Catch Phrase is written with a space between the words)

Alphabet games, part III
If GHOTI can be pronounced "fish" (that's GH as in touGH, O as in wOmen, TI as in moTIon), then what common English word does GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEEAU represent?

Click to Reveal Answer
POTATO (GH as in hiccough, OUGH as in dough, PHTH as in phthisis, EIGH as in eight, TTE as in brunette, EAU as in beau)
