TWO ANSWERS REQUIRED: Because of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Time Magazine scrapped their cover picture of THIS CARTOON FILM CHARACTER and replaced it with THIS AMERICAN with the quote "By God, it was Destiny that brought me here.”
On the morning of December 7th, 1st Lt. Kermit Tyler was alerted to a large "haze of planes" approaching Oahu by the Opana radar station. Tyler told the radar operators to ignore it since he was expecting a large flight of THIS ALPHANUMERIC DESIGNATION OF PLANES to come in that morning. The haze was that of the Japanese Zeros approaching Pearl Harbor.
Other than the Arizona, this is THE ONLY OTHER SHIP that is still submerged at Pearl Harbor as a result of the attack. Situated on the north end of Ford Island, it was a former battleship being used as a target ship.
This was the ONLY BATTLESHIP from Battleship Row to get underway during the attack. It later beached itself at the mouth of the harbor to prevent it being sunk and blocking the only escape point.
Technically speaking, the Americans fired the first shot against the Japanese in WWII when THIS WARSHIP fired upon a Japanese midget sub trying to enter Pearl. The notification of this attack was delayed over hour, giving the command only minutes to react.
At the end of the attack, a quote attributed to Admiral Yamamoto stated that he feared all he had done was THIS ACTION and "filled it with great resolve." He was pretty much spot on.
When the Japanese ambassadors finally delivered the infamous 14 part message to THIS US SECRETARY OF STATE (after bungling the typing and causing a delay in delivery), he said the document "was more crowded with infamous falsehood and distortion" than he had ever seen in his fifty years of service.
In the case of Pearl Harbor the word "Tora" was meant to be an acronym for "TOtsugeki RAigeki," meaning "lightning attack," or "attack achieved." In Japanese, the word "Tora" also translates to THIS ANIMAL.
Many historians speculate the dates of December 5-7, 1941, were the most pivotal three days in the history of the world ending with the attack on Pearl Harbor and beginning with this: On December 5th, the Nazis were five miles from THIS RUSSIAN CITY. On December 6th, the Red Army finally began their counteroffensive that would not end until they reached Berlin in 1945.
After FDR's declaration of war, the House voted 388-1 to declare war on Japan, THIS MONTANA REPRESENTATIVE was the "1." A diehard pacifist, she did the same thing in 1917 when the US declared war on Germany, making her the only person to vote against WWI and WWII.
This cook's assistant on the West Virginia was FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN TO WIN THE NAVY CROSS for his heroic efforts in shooting down Japanese planes during the attack. In the 2001 film "Pearl Harbor," he was played by Cuba Gooding, Jr.
In order for the torpedoes to operate in the shallow depths of Pearl Harbor, a new version complete with wooden fins were developed and manufactured in THIS JAPANESE CITY. Almost four years later, the US, with a little help from the weather, exacted their revenge on it.
