Because tonight is my last night before the students arrive (AKA the calm before the storm) and it's actually storming outside, answer the following about famous storm related stuff.

In 1900, this town was hit by what was the most expensive storm in terms of damages adjusted for inflation. It also made a few bucks for Erik Larson in 1999.
This Cat5 storm devastated South Florida, especially Homestead, in 1992. It's unique in a way given its name and the time it hit Florida.
Three Cat5 storms hit the US in the 20th Century: the answer to Q2, the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and this storm that ravaged the Mississippi coast in 1969.
The aforementioned "Cat5" is based on this doubly-eponymous scale.
On Thursday, September 21, 1989, these two colleges took part in what was known as the "Hugo Bowl," as it was played live on ESPN while Hugo raged across SC and GA. Both Div I-AA, at the time, one team is now in the SunBelt while the other is in C-USA. (The picture is more of an illustration of how bad it was than anything else. I mean, you can kind of see the uniforms, so there's that bit of help).
This was the hurricane that decimated the shrimping industry (save for one boat named Jenny) in Bayou LaBatre, Alabama in 1974. While the local industry took a while to recover, Bubba Gump Shrimp flourished. (PS- it was a real storm by the way).
From April 3-4, 1974, a series of storms known as the Super Outbreak produced 130 tornadoes from IL all the way down to GA. Over 30 F5 twisters were formed by these storms. This OH town had the deadliest of all the F5s produced that day, killing over 30 people and wiping out most of the town.
This typhoon is considered to be one of the most powerful ever to hit the Philippines, which it did in November 2013. It had the strongest sustained one minute wind speed ever recorded in the Pacific and bodies were still being discovered months later. I will take either name.
The afforementioned F5 is based on this scale measuring the destructive scale of tornadoes. It was introduced in 1971 by a faculty member of the University of Chicago.
I wouldn't write about a tropical storm except this home hit close to home. This tropical storm made headlines when it parked itself over Georgia for what felt like a solid month* (despite what former WSB weatherman David Chandley said it would do), causing a portion of I-75 in Macon to flood. This picture, along with many others, made the newspapers in Germany (where I escaped all the wetness on a student exchange). HINT: It's an "A" storm. *FTR, it was three days but still, look at all that water.
While it went on to cause bigger problems hundreds of miles away, Hurricane Katrina cause some minor issues during the outdoor events surrounding this awards show.
This Weather Channel meteorologist became a viral sensation with his "Thundersnow" excitement in 2015. It was later set to a rather well made music video
