At the Second Battle of Chin'toka during the Dominion War, the USS Defiant was destroyed along with 99.6% of the overall Allied fleet gathered there. When Deep Space Nine was sent a replacement Defiant-class ship, it was given special dispensation to change its name from that of this South American city to USS Defiant. (presumably to save of visual effects costs.)
