January: At the Fillmore in San Francisco, Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters hold the first of these parties, reflecting that LSD-25 is not illegal under California law. Two years later, they will be immortalized in a work by Tom Wolfe.

February: This British Prime Minister calls for a General Election, to be held on March 31, an election that will see his Labour Party gain 95 seats.

March: In the NCAA Men's Basketball Final in College Park, Maryland, this school's Miners, coached by Don Haskins, starts five African-American players and upsets coach Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats to win the 1966 NCAA Championship. (Two names accepted.)

April: This man becomes General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He will serve as co-equal with premier Alexei Kosygin until the 1970s.

May: On May 16, both the Beach Boys and Bob Dylan release albums that will receive lasting critical acclaim. Name both of these albums.

June: In ruling on this case, the Supreme Court of the United States rules that the police must inform suspects of their rights before questioning them.

July: An Act to amend section 3 of the Administrative Procedure Act, chapter 324, of the Act of June 11, 1946 (60 Stat. 238), to clarify and protect the right of the public to information, and for other purposes, better known by what modern acronym, is signed in to law by President Johnson on July 4.

August: Using the quotations from the chairman contained in "The Little Red Book", Red Guards under Mao's approval begin this socio-cultural undertaking to purge and reorganize China's Communist Party.

September: "The Man Trap" becomes the first of 79 episodes of this television series to air on NBC.

October: Following France's withdrawal from the alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization moves its headquarters to this European city.

November: On the same day Ronald Reagan is elected governor of California, this former Massachusetts Attorney General becomes the first African-American elected to the United States Senate since the end of Reconstruction.

December: This film producer and resort visionary dies from acute circulatory collapse caused by lung cancer, at the age of 65. He will be buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, despite all of the cold urban legends you may have heard.
