Need to bone up on your Billboard Chart history? Ever get a question at pub quiz about a one-hit-wonder and you scream in frustration? Then this series of quizzes will help you! I'll be talking about artists that only had ONE song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'll be doing a quiz or three (there's a lot of these songs) for every decade that the Hot 100 has been around. So, get your music brains on and let's begin! Let's go back to the greatest decade of music: the 1990s: the time of wonder(walls), teen pop, and not having to take your shoes off before you got on an airplanes.

Let's start with the most recent track and our ONLY entry from 1999. Ricky Martin literally barreled his way into our lives at the 41st Grammy Awards with the absolute jam "The Cup of Life." Taking advantage of his popularity after that performance, WHAT SONG with a 4-word title was released a little less than a month later and became Mr. Martin's only #1 hit?
Now, I'll stick with the theme of Latin music and go to our only entry from 1996. Los Del Rio (with a little help from a remix by the Bayside Boys) hit #1 with THIS TRACK and started a dance craze that would last for many, many, many years?
"You're unbelievable...OH! What the fuck?!" THIS BAND, from Gloucestershire in the UK, sampled Andrew Dice Clay and the Black Panther Party on their signature track.
In 1992, Right Said Fred gave us a true gift in the form of WHAT SONG? Fred and Richard Fairbrass, the bald brothers who formed the band, said they got the idea while they were running a gym where there was "lots of narcissism and posing."
It's crazy to think that Aerosmith never hit #1 in their 70s heyday or even with the 1986 Run-DMC version of "Walk This Way." Nope, they didn't get to the top spot until 1998 when "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" was included on WHAT MOVIE SOUNDTRACK? It was even nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars but lost to a duet by Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston (OMG!) for The Prince of Egypt.
Did you know the band Mr. Big was a supergroup? This author did not. Anyway, they hit it big in 1992 with WHAT SONG, which Billboard described as that "headbangers get folky on this harmonious strummer."
"Chickity China the Chinese chicken" is the opening line to the second verse of a 1998 song called "One Week." This song also references Aquaman, Leann Rimes, Bert Kaempfert, X-Files, Harrison Ford, Sting, Snickers, Kurosawa and Sailor Moon. NAME THE BAND.
A theme for the next two questions: 1997. Before the Jonas Brothers finally got their #1 song in 2019, three other brothers- Issac, Taylor and Zac- hit the scene with a mega-smash called "MMMBop." What is their LAST NAME?
Also in 1997, the Spice Girls (you might have heard of them) got their #1 with the worldwide hit jam "Wannabe." I want you to name THREE MEMBERS of the Spice Girls. (THREE ANSWERS REQUIRED: I will accept their first name, last name or their Spice name)
Let's go to the beginning of the decade for the next 3 questions: 1990. WHAT CANADIAN SINGER got to the top of the pops by belting out "Black Velvet"? You might say she did it in a slow, southern style.
Nelson, a set of long-haired blonde twin brothers, hit the charts with WHAT SONG in 1990? Unsurprisingly, they did not match the success of their father, Ricky Nelson, who had the very first Billboard #1 song way back in 1958.
Now, for the sad: Sinead O'Connor made us all weep with her powerful 1990 video for "Nothing Compares 2 U." WHICH ARTIST wrote the song and released it as part of his side project The Family in 1985? Might account for the funky spelling.
"You say I only hear what I want to" is the opening line to "Stay," a 1994 lead single from the Reality Bites soundtrack that immediately captured the hearts of females everywhere. The song is well known as the only #1 for Lisa Loeb but her backing back is also credited as well. WHAT BAND backs Loeb on this lovely song?
