OKLAHOMA

The Illinois state capitol underwent a renovation in 2011 that saw the addition of staircase lamp posts shaped like women holding up the lamps. This is particularly notable because the lamp posts were in the original design but deemed too risqué by state legislators in the 1870s. The original lamp posts were thus moved to what other state's capitol building, designed by the same architects, where they remain to this day?

IOWA

Construction was not officially completed until 1797, but despite that, the building can be considered to have served as the United States Capitol for a brief period in 1783 and 1784. What state's capitol can stake this claim as well as the claim to be the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use?

MARYLAND

George R. Mann's original design for the Montana state capitol was eventually rejected as being too costly. It was later selected as the basic design for this other state's capitol - which took sixteen years to complete, overseen by George W. Donaghey, who completed two entire terms as governor during the building's construction.

ARKANSAS

This American architect gained national fame for his design of the Minnesota state capitol. He later designed the West Virginia capitol as well as notable skyscrapers including the New York Life and Woolworth Buildings in New York City.

Cass GILBERT

He finished his term as governor despite being elected to the Senate in the fall of 1930, in part as a way to ensure that the new state capitol building's completion was not derailed by political opponents. Perhaps fittingly, he was later shot inside the building (by a man with the same last name as the building's architect, though unrelated).

Huey LONG

The modern capitol complex in this state is the country's most recently constructed, with the 22-story New Capitol completed in 1977. (The state legislature meets in two adjacent four-story buildings that make the entire thing look uncomfortably phallic.)

FLORIDA

The current capitol building in this state is the third-newest in the country, completed in 1966 - but the capital also contains the oldest existing capitol building in the country, Palace of the Governors, which was built in 1610.

On July 10, 2015, after years of controversy, the Confederate flag was finally removed from the South Carolina statehouse grounds. Much more quietly, the flag had also been removed from a memorial on the grounds of this state's capitol - which once served as the Confederate capitol - on June 24, 2015, after the state's governor, finding that (unlike in South Carolina) there was no law requiring the flag to stay up, ordered its removal.

Most state capitol buildings are known as "State Capitol" or "State House," but one state knows its capitol building as "Legislative Hall." The name is appropriate, as Jack Markell's office is located in a separate building across the street. Name the state.

The 13th, 15th, and 18th steps outside the west entrance to the Colorado state capitol all contain markers indicating what distinction?

ONE MILE ABOVE SEA LEVEL

An inscription on the outside of this state's capitol brags that it is "the nation's oldest state house in which the legislature still occupies its original chambers," having done so since 1819. It is particularly impressive that the 400-member State House of Representatives has never felt a need for additional space.
