Though Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders won much of the press and glory from the incorrectly named Battle of San Juan Hill, Roosevelt's own account of the day readily credits the efforts of the 10th Cavalry and 24th Infantry Regiments of Colored Troops, known as the "Smoked Yankees" by the Cubans, but better known by this name from their efforts in fighting in the Indian Wars.
