This Harvard-educated soldier and politician served on the city council and in the state legislature and Senate, all of which met in the city where he was born and where his namesake airport is located. In his military service, he rose to the rank of major general, eventually commanding the U.S. Army's 26th Infantry Division (known as the "Yankee Division" for its New England roots.)
