Famous Baseball "Plays" by BringMoreLegos

Question 8

Two answers required. A 1989 review by Frank Rich of the New York Times drew comparisons between a new play's title character, once acquitted of a scandalous baseball sin, and an ongoing inquiry into another player. The contemporary player had coincidentally broken the older player's all-time hits record (but would be less successful in the investigation). WHO WERE THESE TWO BASEBALL PLAYERS?

TY COBB and PETE ROSE
