Farmers in Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea first domesticated varieties of the Musa genus from around 8,000 BCE. Cultivars later spread to Africa with Muslim traders, to the Pacific with the Polynesians and to the Americas with the Portuguese. While the wild varieties contained seeds, modern cultivation relies on propagation though shoots and cuttings called "suckers". What is this amazing plant?
