While Ft. Knox has traditionally been the depository for a large quantity of the nation's gold reserve, the bullion depository at this location has traditionally held the largest part of the nation's silver reserve. Even though this facility minted cents for most of its history, it did not become an official branch of the Mint until 1988, and today mints mostly commemorative coins and medals. It is far better known for the institute of higher learning that the bullion depository shares its property with.
