In his duty as Minister for Foreign Affairs before and during the Second World war, he signed the eponymous non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union which was named for him and his Soviet counterpart Vyacheslav Molotov. He was convicted, sentenced to death, and hanged at the Nuremberg IMT on October 16, 1946.
