By virtually any measure, the highest-ranking Nazi tried before the International Military Tribunal (IMT) at Nuremberg, this military and political figure oversaw among other things the German Air Force ("Luftwaffe") throughout the war. He was sentenced to death by the IMT, but cheated the hangman when he committed suicide by ingesting cyanide the night before his scheduled execution.
