Quiz Description

In the early 2000s, a general-purpose audio program called MusicMatch was in common use. One of its features was that the user could record anything with the cheap microphone that came with the computer (plugged into the "mic in" port of the computer's sound card), and MusicMatch would save the audio file in mp3 format, with a default name of "mic in track" followed by a number.

Peer-to-peer networks (Napster, Soulseek, WinMX, etc.) were also popular at this time, and users would sometimes unintentionally share every mp3 on their computer, including any mic in track files that they had recorded. This meant that anyone also connected to the same p2p network could simply search for "mic in track" and download any of those files, often without the creator's knowledge.

The following audio clips, of anonymous people covering various songs, are from my own personal collection of mic in tracks. You can hear more of my collection through my ancient website.
