Whoa! Yeah! Kickstart my heart! Hope it never stops! Need to bone up on your Billboard Chart history? Ever get a question at pub quiz about a one-hit-wonder and you scream in frustration? Then this series of quizzes will help you! I'll be talking about artists that only had ONE song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'll be doing a quiz or three (there's a lot of these songs) for every decade that the Hot 100 has been around. So, get your music brains on and let's begin!

This last 80s quiz of my series is a hodge podge of random genres but let's start with one of my favorite artists of all time: Falco. This guy was so f'n cool that, in 1986, he scored the only #1 song that is primarily sung in German. NAME THIS SONG which name-checks a famous composer and whose video featured Falco in full 18th century garb.
The song "Venus" (I'm your venus, I'm your fire, blah blah blah) has reached #1 three different times. The first time was in 1970 for Dutch band Shocking Blue and the second was as part of a medley called "Stars on 45." But perhaps the most famous and well-known version is by THIS FEMALE GROUP who, in 1986, covered the song as a follow-up to their other big smash, "Cruel Summer."
Let's talk about another song that hit #1 twice. In 1987, R&B group Club Nouveau scored their only #1 with THIS SONG. It is much more famously known as the only #1 for Bill Withers in 1972 and a 1989 film starring Morgan Freeman.
Since I'm talking about actors, let's move to THIS ACTOR, who hit #1 in 1989 with "Rock On." Hey kids, rock and roll and give me the name of this guy who made his name as Danny Romalotti on The Young and the Restless and, on Broadway, as the starring role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Bruce Hornsby and the Range hit the top spot in 1986 with a piano-driven social commentary jam. It's probably better known as the main sample for one of 2Pac's biggest hits about poverty and police brutality. Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat and NAME EITHER SONG.
R&B group Atlantic Starr's 1987 #1 chart topper was a high school slow dance staple. Maybe those kids looked at each other and thought, "We both know our love will grow and forever it will be you and me." NAME THIS SONG which also saw love on several soap operas.
An ode to Playboy models maybe? NAME THIS SONG by The J. Geils Band which hit #1 in 1982 and inspired countless attempts at karaoke in which singers emphasize they aren't in NeverNeverland.
In 1988, pop group Will to Power made a mash-up of two very popular 70s songs by Peter Frampton and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Their medley didn't quite have the rocking power of the OGs but it did make it to #1. Amazing. NAME BOTH SONGS.
Well, we were certainly heading for the 90s but maybe not living in the wild, wild west as THIS BAND suggested in 1988. They have a place in history as the only British artist to hit #1 in the US while never charting in their home country. Also, while it's not official, consider this question our entrant for Plagiarism Corner as it noticeably rips off "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello. I hate this song so much.
1988's "The Flame" was a significant departure from THIS ILLINOIS ROCK BAND but it got them to #1, a feat not achieved during their first heyday with songs like "I Want You to Want Me" and "Surrender."
If I ask you who sings "La Bamba" and you say anyone other than Ritchie Valens, I personally would be shocked. But alas, THIS LOS ANGELES BAND hit the top spot with a cover for the 1987 movie of the same name starring Lou Diamond Phillips.
English rock band Cutting Crew hit it big with THIS 1987 SONG off their debut album Broadcast. Allegedly, frontman Nick Van Eede got the title while having sex with his girlfriend and suffering "la petite mort," a French metaphor for an orgasm.
I welcome you back to Instrumental Time, a topic we haven't touched since Baauer's 2015 "Harlem Shake." But this time, we center on what might be the coolest TV show of all time or just the 1980s: Miami Vice. WHAT COMPOSER did the theme and therefore got the credit when it soared to #1 in 1985?
And now, our last 80s song and one of the most iconic movie and sports themes of all time. From 1981, WHAT SONG (same title as the film) shot to #1 and made Greek musician Vangelis a go-to composer for the decade? If you're having trouble, just imagine people running.
