Whoa! Yeah! Kickstart my heart! Hope it never stops! Need to bone up on your Billboard Chart history? Ever get a question at pub quiz about a one-hit-wonder and you scream in frustration? Then this series of quizzes will help you! I'll be talking about artists that only had ONE song hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. I'll be doing a quiz or three (there's a lot of these songs) for every decade that the Hot 100 has been around. So, get your music brains on and let's begin!

Gotta make a move to a town that's right for me! In 1980, in the last days of disco, Minneapolis band Lipps Inc. released THIS SONG about a place that's groovin' with some energy.
Let's get the disco questions out of the way and go to 1981 when the song "Celebration" hit #1 for THIS GROUP from New Jersey. Other hits from them include "Jungle Boogie," "Hollywood Swinging," and "Get Down on It."
Let's keep it rolling right into 1982 when Toni Basil brought to us one of the most divisive songs of all time. Some people love it and some people absolutely hate it. I personally think it's so fine that it blows my mind. NAME THE SONG and do a cheer while you're at it.
One thing the early 1980s brought us was new wave and synthesizers and I loved it. One of the anthems of this genre is 1983's "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by the Eurythmics. NAME EITHER MEMBER of this group. One was the androgynous female singer with the striking blonde hairdo. The other was the male musician who produced all their albums.
1984 saw the rise of Boy George and his band Culture Club. WHAT SONG, off their second album Colour By Numbers, hit #1? It comes and goes. Oh yeah, it comes and goes.
Let's continue our journey through this wacky decade and go to 1985 where the dance jam "Oh Sheila" hit the top spot. The song is commonly misattributed to Prince due to the vocal and musical style but is by WHAT GROUP from Flint, Michigan? Founded by Melvin Riley Jr and Gordon Strozier, they would have another hit song, "Love You Down."
Category is....Best Song Nominees! In May 1986, director Tony Scott brought us summer blockbuster Top Gun and the world was never the same. A lot of people might name Kenny Loggins' "Danger Zone" or the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" as their favorite song in the movie but WHAT SONG by Berlin impressed the critics, hit #1 AND won the Oscar for Best Song that year?
English pop singer Kim Wilde might've first seen success with her jam track "Kids in America," but she didn't hit #1 until 1987 with a cover of "You Keep Me Hangin' On." This song was originally done by WHAT GIRL GROUP who also saw the song hit #1 all the way back in 1966?
The late 80s brought us glorious, glorious hair metal and believe me, I'll get there. It also brought us a flash of interest in reggae. WHAT 1988 SONG, featured in the movie Cocktail (the power of Tom Cruise, I tell ya), was released by Bobby McFerrin and was the first acappella song to reach #1? Remember: in every life, we have some trouble but when you worry, you make it double.
This is a strange story: in 1989, Brian Philips, a program director in Minneapolis, started spinning a sappy soft rock ballad called "When I'm With You." It hit #1 but what was strange was that the Canadian band that recorded it wasn't together anymore and the song had originally been released in 1983. It had even made the Billboard 100, peaking at #61. NAME THE BAND.
The 1980s also saw the rise and explosive popularity of MTV and music videos. One of the most popular was filmed in 1985 at Kim's Cafe in London and featured lead singer Morten Harket and his girlfriend, Bunty Bailey. Using a combo of pencil-sketch animation and live-action shots, it lost at the 1986 VMAs to Dire Straits and their equally stunning video for "Money for Nothing." NAME BOTH THE SONG AND THE BAND. (TWO ANSWERS REQUIRED)
1987 saw Expose become the first girl group in history with four Top 10 singles off their debut album, Exposure. Which hit #1: (A) Come Go With Me (B) Point of No Return (C) Let Me Be the One or (D) Seasons Change?
I won't lie: I had never heard of Billy Vera and the Beaters before doing research for this series. However, upon listening to their #1 song, "At This Moment," I immediately was transported to my childhood. My mother was a huge fan of THIS TELEVISION SHOW and loved the song after it was used in 1986 as a theme of sorts for Alex P. Keaton and his girlfriend Ellen Reed.
Speaking of my mother, one of her favorite artists is Eddie Rabbitt. God bless her. She was in high school at the height of Rabbitt's success and thought he was super dreamy. WHAT 1981 SONG, off his sixth album Horizon, crossed over from the country charts and hit #1? In it, Eddie expresses his love for thunder and lightning but moreso for another weather phenomenon.
Let's finish this off with one of this writer's favorite songs: "West End Girls." Re-released three weeks before I was born in 1986, WHAT ENGLISH POP DUO were influenced by T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land and Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" to write this song about class structure and the pressures of inner-city life?
