In Isaac Asimov's 1994 memoir, he called this man "the most powerful force in science fiction ever". This MIT grad was the head editor of Astounding Science Fiction (later called Analog Science Fiction and Fact) from 1937 to 1971. In 1996, this man, along with Jack Williamson, A. E. van Vogt, and Hugo Gernsback were the inaugural inductees into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. Identify this editor and writer who wrote the novella Who Goes There?, the source material for The Thing.
Speaking of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, it was not until 2016 that individual projects, franchises, and actors were recognized, with this actor and Leonard Nimoy being the first two people inducted primarily as actors. This actor won an Emmy for his voice-over narration of Ken Burns' The War, and also provided the opening narration and the voice of Okkoto in the English dub of Princess Mononoke. In addition to playing Imam Abu al-Walid in Pitch Black, he also played Rowdy Roddy Piper's friend and 10 minute sparring partner in John Carpenter's They Live. Identify this guy who played Mary's dad in There's Something About Mary, in addition to playing Childs inThe Thing.
Carpenter was not the first to bring a version of Who Goes there? to the big screen, and in fact the 1951 version was the first to use "The Thing" in its title. However, the 1951 version had a longer title. What three words come after "The Thing" in the title of the 1951 film adaptation?
Carpenter much later after the fact considered The Thing to be the first of what he called his "Apocalypse Trilogy". Name either of the other two Carpenter films which complete that trilogy. One was a 1987 film about a team of scientists trying to contain a green liquid in the basement of a church which seems to be the devil, and the other is a 1994 film starring Sam Neil investigating insanity caused by reading an author's books.
Two Quentin Tarantino films drew heavily from The Thing. One film influenced by The Thing was The Hateful Eight in which Tarantino even cast Kurt Russell in the lead. Which earlier work by Tarantino also heavily borrowed from The Thing, particularly the idea of a group of men succumbing to paranoia, not being sure who is who.
John Carpenter usually scores his major films, but this composer scored The Thing, with its brooding, dark minimalist organ music. This man was given an honorary Oscar in 2007 before winning his first competitive Oscar for The Hateful Eight, becoming the oldest person to ever win a competitive Oscar in any category to that time. He had earlier been nominated 5 times for his scores which include The Untouchables. Identify this legendary Italian composer who somehow never got nominated for an Oscar for his iconic score for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. (edited at 2:57 pm, April 7, 2020 (EDT))
Rob Bottin, then only 22 years old, was responsible for almost all of the creature effects in the film. Admitted to the hospital with exhaustion, the scene in the kennel was turned over to this man, who was already on his way to being a Hollywood legend. Identify this practical effects artist who would win four of his nine Oscar nominations, including for work on Aliens, Jurassic Park, and Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
Allegedly, because the creature effect used real animal guts, the autopsy scene sickened all of the actors except for this guy. This guy earned his first screen credit for a role in The China Syndrome, and was only 50 when he played a senior citizen in the film Cocoon. Identify this former Quaker Oats and diabetus spokesman who is a major supporter of cockfighting and played Blair in The Thing.
The film takes place at United States National Science Institute Station 4. However, the alien was not discovered by the Americans. Which nation owned the Antarctic research outpost which did discover the flying saucer and pilot (MacReady never could get the nationality right!)?
This is the studio that made The Thing. It is unusual because this studio's classic logo does not appear at the start of the film (just a title card saying that this studio was presenting the picture). Ironically, there was a plan to show the logo, and then show the alien space craft crashing into the logo to get the film started. Name this studio, famed for its table of movie monstrosities.
The only female to have a speaking role in The Thing was Adrienne Barbeau, who voiced a computer playing which game against MacReady at the beginning of the film. NAme this game which MacReady loses, prompting him to dump his whiskey into the computer, shorting it out, and declaring the computer a "cheating b!+(h".
In what month does The Thing take place? While no month is ever mentioned, MacReday mentions it is the first week of a particular season, which clues you in to the month.
