The real action in "Patton" (not the flag speech, more on that later) begins after this disastrous battle named after a 2 mile wide gap in the Atlas Mountains in Tunisia where Rommel's Afrika Korps obliterated the US Army II Corps. Patton tours the site before taking his command later on.
When Patton arrives to take command, he begins to instill discipline among his troops, something which was lacking beforehand. One such incident involved a soldier not wearing his helmet. When Patton tells him to, the soldier answers back that he would not be able to use what item with it on? Patton then suggests he drill holes in the helmet before walking off.
"Ask him if he wants me to give it back." This retort is to Lt. Col. Codman after Patton liberated what Italian town after being told specifically not to do so.
As Patton is watching his tanks go against the Afrika Korps, he's impressed that Rommel's own tactics worked against him, prompting Patton to say what four words at the end of this sentence: "Rommel... you magnificent bastard ......!"?
Mini theme: the greatest speech ever put to film: Patton's opening speech in front of the Flag. The scene is based on a speech given by Patton to what numbered Army (which he led) just before the invasion of France in 1944. This group was vital in the invasion of Germany, reaching all the way to Czechoslovakia before the war ended.
