The official name of the cathedral is Notre Dame de Paris. What does "Notre Dame" translate to?

The cathedral sits in the middle of Paris on this well known geographic landmark, believed my many to have been a fortified crossing point held by the Parisii, a small Gallic tribe. At its western end is the Pont Neuf, or "New Bridge."

Within 30 years either way, the construction of Notre Dame, beginning with the laying of the cornerstone, began in this year and would last for roughly 100 years.

Many times during its existence, the cathedral has been the victim of vandalism. In 1548, this French group damaged some of the statues inside, claiming them to be "idolatrus."

During the French Revolution, the cathedral was again the target of vandals. This time statues of Biblical figures were beheaded inside and the church was rededicated for two cults from the era. Name either cult.

In 1804, the cathedral became the scene of one of the biggest ego trips in history when Napoleon took the crown from this Pope and placed it on his own head.

In one of the more heartbreaking images from the 2019 fire, the spire that had stood for almost 200 years fell over from the intense heat and flame. The spire was made of both wood and this metal. (edited at 3:20 pm, April 16, 2019 (PDT))

In 2013, this object was raised above the sacristy, or the room where the priest prepares for a service. The items inside, known as Buckfast, were bred by Benedictine monks for their calmness and the their placement is meant to "recall the beauty of the Creation and responsibility of man towards it.”

Within hours of the fire, over 300 million Euros had been pledged to help with the rebuilding efforts. One such donation was by French billionaire François-Henri Pinault, who is married to this actress who herself played a character in a film adaptation of Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."

Among the several statues above the Portal of the Virgin is a statue holding their decapitated head. This is the statue of what patron saint of France, whose main basilica is located in a Paris suburb that shares his name.

In 1996, Disney released their animated version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." What actor voiced Quasimodo? He is perhaps better known as playing Larry "Pinto" Kroger in "Animal House" and a certain 18th Century composer in 1984.

In the 1990s, Notre Dame was added as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The UN stands for the United Nations. What does the "ESCO" stand for.
