With one exception, the Tigers have only retired numbers of players who are in the Hall of Fame. Who is this exception, the primary leftfielder on the 1968 Tigers who unfortunately shared his name with a notorious figure in the 1988 U.S. presidental election.
Because of this policy, the numbers of Lou Whitaker (1) and Alan Trammell (3) are still in circulation. Jose Iglesias is the only player to wear 1, while Ian Kinsler wears 3. What other player wore 3 after Trammell, the Tigers' primary DH in the late 2000s.
The Tigers have twice finished in first place by an improbable half-game due to scheduling irregularities. The first instance gave them the pennant in 1908, the second time gave them a division title in 1972. Who was the manager of this latter team, who got a lot out of a very aging core of the 1968 team. He is more famous for managing other American League teams.
Despite finishing the season 5-19, this man pitched two no-hitters for the Tigers in 1952, the first in MLB history to do so.
Despite winning 5 of their last 6 games, the 2013 Tigers still set the American League record for losses. How many did they lose that season?
This man is showing incredible restraint by smiling after what just happened to him. Who is this pitcher?
Before adopting the name Tiger Stadium in 1960, the stadium had been named for the owner of the team. Name either of these owners, one who owned the team from 1912-38, the other from 1938-60.
Although Ernie Harwell is considered the favorite as best Tiger broadcaster of all time, this other man could be a close second. He played third base for the Tigers and other AL teams, and denied Ted Williams a triple crown in 1949 by leading the league in hitting. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1983.
In retrospect it seems like a bad trade, but in 1987 John Smoltz was sent to the Atlanta Braves for this journeyman pitcher, who went 9-0 for the Motor City Kitties, helping them to a 1987 division title.
Although Ty Cobb has his non-existent number "retired", this other Hall of Famer does not. Playing 15 seasons for the Tigers between 1914-29, he hit .403 in the 1923 season. He later served as the play-by-play man for many years.
The Tigers have played this opponent more than any other, and currently hold a 1,106-1,053 advantage as of August 2015.
One of baseball all-time one hit wonders, he gained national prominence when he twirled a complete game against the Yankees on Monday Night Baseball in June 1976 in a game that lasted just 1:51. However, injuries limited him to just 27 starts over the next four years.
