The Oscar nominations came out today, and none of this year's ACTUAL best movies were nominated for top prizes AS USUAL. Here's a quiz about the best movies I saw in 2017, snubs be damned.

It seems odd that a film whose title is barely more than a list of two established brands could be the best movie of 2017, but it was. Yet not only was it snubbed for Best Picture, it was snubbed in its own niche category! That's not the only recent setback for co-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, having been fired from their Solo directing project. Maybe the January release killed this flick's chances to, ahem, swoop in and, ahem, build an awards case. What film is this?
This best movie of 2017 was also based on a beloved childhood property. Notable snubs beyond Best Picture include the excellent performances of RJ Cyler (as an autism-spectrum teen) and Elizabeth Banks (as a bling-obsessed villain). What film is this?
This 2017's best movie I can sort of understand getting snubbed, as it is a sequel (one of several), but it had an Academy Award pedigree, featuring two previous Best Actress winners (2003 and 2007). What film is this?
This best movie of 2017 was a sequel, too, but the previous films (in this sequence, if not the gigafranchise at large) were garbage. Luckily, a wry Antipodean director (similarly brilliant as an actor in his craggy blue supporting part) breathed new life into this tired mythos... and received NOTHING from the Academy for his efforts! What film is this? (edited at 11:46 am, January 23, 2018 (PST))
Those nominators concerned with the perennial lack of female nominees for Best Director could have turned to this best movie of 2017 (despite the dubious history of its own gigafranchise)... and yet. It's not like movies about a princess named Diana haven't done well at the Oscars (just ask that 2007 Best Actress winner from Q3). What film is this?
It's not often that two best movies in the same year share a star, but this flick's big name also appeared in the answer to Q3 (and that's not even the last time that will happen in this quiz). This sequel hit theaters a mere 22 years after the original, and unsurprisingly featured none of the original cast — not Bonnie Hunt, David Alan Grier, Bebe Neuwirth, not even Kirsten Dunst, nor tragically the title star. What sequel film is this? (I'll probably require the full title, but we'll see.)
Another sequel, another installation in a gigafranchise, and yet this was the best movie of 2017. Its star has had a wild career:
Two questions ago, I said, "It's not often that two best movies in the same year share a star." Well, it's happened twice. The other star from Q3 also anchored this not-unsimilar flick, the third installment in a long-dormant action franchise. He did not appear in the second entry, and was replaced by a rapper who is no stranger to the big screen (having even been portrayed by his own son in a Best Original Screenplay nominee directed by the same man as Q3). Both title role actors showed up for part three, whose full title (required!) pays homage to the original star's homecoming. What film is this?
We're not done yet with long-overdue multi-sequels, and this one happened to be the best movie of 2017. The original was a masterpiece, though you could be forgiven for missing / not remembering / deliberately blocking from your mind the events of Dead Man's Chest, At World's End, and On Stranger Tides, but you'd probably need a quick recap to understand part five. What film is this? (Full title definitely required. That's a rule, not a guideline.)
This is the last franchise installment to be the best movie of 2017, and what a one it was! In fairness, it did receive 4 nominations (Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Visual Effects, and Original Score), but the list of acting snubs could stretch to two digits. At least those sound mixers have the chance to be rewarded for creating this (click the link). What film is this?
This best movie of 2017 did get one nomination, for Adapted Screenplay, which is honestly all I really expected. Of course, I (and many others) had expected more prior to some upsetting news about its star. He offered a dodgy half-specific-denial, half-blanket-apology in response to accusations about his misconduct, but it frankly rang as hollow as Johnny's assertion that he did not hit Lisa — it's not true; it's bullshit; he did not hit her; he did NOT — oh, hi Mark.
The final best movie of 2017 was only two-and-a-half minutes long, but it brought so much joy to so many. This transcendent piece of art was in fact a mistakenly uploaded trailer that had been cut without the proper sound mix, playing only a few postproduction effects and screams over eerie silence for the first minute. What feature film did this trailer advertise? (And yeah, it was another one of those years-later sequels.)
