Which stadium (giving the name it was known by for most of its history), currently the site of a parking lot, hosted the first All-Star Game in 1933? Third baseman, Jimmy Dykes, representing the home team, scored the first run in All-Star Game history on a Lefty Grove RBI single.
The second All-Star Game in 1934 saw an impressive feat from pitcher Carl Hubbell, who struck out five future Hall-of-Fame players in succession. Name any three of those five Hubbell victims/future Hall-of-Famers.
Fifty years later in 1984 Hubbell threw out the first pitch, and then watched as two NL pitchers combined to strikeout Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, George Brett, Lance Parrish, Chet Lemon, and Alvin Davis in succession. Name either two of those NL pitchers who each struck out three batters.
Three players can claim to have hit walk-off home runs to end an All-Star Game. The first was a three-run bomb to win the 1941 game for the AL. The second ended a 12 inning affair with an NL win in Milwaukee in 1955. The last one was a three-run blast off the bat of a Phillie to win the 1964 Game at Shea. Identify any one of the three players to hit walk-off homers in an All-Star Game.
Who was quoted as saying, in the wake of the 1970 All-Star Game: I just want to get to that plate as quickly as I can. Besides, nobody told me they changed it to girls’ softball between third and home.
At the 1971 All-Star Game, Reggie Jackson hit a sub-orbital home run that reliable estimates put at around 520 feet on to the roof of Tiger Stadium. Identify the Pirates pitcher who surrendered the famous home run ... a man who pitched a no-hitter against the Padres the year before, despite claims that he was unable to remember any details of that game.
While five players have hit two home runs in a single All-Star Game, only this man ever legged out two triples in a single All-Star Game ... both hit off of Vida Blue, and both, shockingly were hits to left field. Name this criminally underrated hitter who did this as the defending AL MVP at the 1978 All-Star Game in San Diego, the player with the highest career OBP of any player over the course of the 1970s.
Perhaps the greatest defensive play in All-Star Game history came at the 1979 Game at Seattle's Kingdome, when Dave "the Cobra" Parker rifled a ball from right field, on the fly, to Gary Carter to save a run in the 8th inning of a 6-6 game. Name either the Yankee third baseman who hit the ball to Parker, or the Angels catcher who was gunned down at the plate.
Bo Jackson led off the 1989 All-Star Game with a home run to center field. Not surprisingly, the immortal Vin Scully was on the call for NBC. Which former Cubs radio broadcaster of many, many years ago was sharing the booth with Scully after leaving his previous non-broadcasting job earlier that year.
This man turned in a comedic at-bat vs. Randy Johnson which started with a 98 mile-an-hour fastball uncorked over his head, and saw him flailing at the next three pitches while standing as far from home plate as he could. This man was diagnosed with testicular cancer after an examination which resulted from a spring training accident where a pickoff thrown from Mitch Williams shattered his cup. Identify this man who ended his career with a 0.300 batting average and 100 home runs, a beloved first baseman who started his career with the Padres, ended it with the White Sox, and was part of the NL champion Phillies in 1993.
The 2002 Game in Milwaukee had one of those warm moments that makes you forget Barry Bonds was Barry Bonds. In the first inning, Bonds launched a home run ball to right-centerfield, but this Twins centerfielder jumped high enough to catch the ball for the third out that was at least an entire foot above the wall. Bonds responded by joyfully intercepting this centerfielder, and lifting him with a grand fireman's carry. Identify this outfielder who won 9 Gold Glove Awards.
Two questions ... answer either one:
Who hit the only grand slam home run in All-Star Game hisotry?
or
Who hit the only inside-the-park home run in All-Star Game history?
