Quiz Description

In this audio quiz, I include excerpts of songs sampled by hip-hop artists and artists in other genres. Your job is to identify both the LEAD ARTIST and the SONG that had a hit with the excerpted sample. (Since this quiz includes a decent number of hip hop songs, where featured artists and parenthetical titles are common, I will try to be a lenient grader, but in general LEAD ARTISTS are favored over featured artists & non-parenthetical titles are favored over what's in the parentheses.) As clues, I will give the name of the performer of the source of the sample & some information about the chart history of the hit that included that sample. Where possible, I have tried to find relatively obvious instrumental or vocal samples, as opposed to just basslines and drum breaks which often reappear in multiple hit songs (e.g., the so-called "Amen break" or Billy Squier's "The Big Beat"). Unless otherwise stated, all chart positions are from the Billboard Top 40, although in this case, I will be using more chart positions from the R&B and hip hop charts, not just the pop charts.
