The recent quiz on German progressive rock (aka "Krautrock") at Learned League has inspired this new quiz on the gratuitous use of umlauts in band names and album titles, both heavy metal umlauts and umlauts in other genres. Because not everybody has the same capability to render diacritical marks on their keyboard, I won't require people to include umlauts in their answer, but it would be totally "metal" if you did.

The second band to use an umlaut in its name was the Krautrock band Amon Düül, which later split into competing Amon Düül and Amon Düül II factions. Amon Düül originally formed from a radical West German commune that also included future members of what European terrorist group founded in 1970?

What jazzy French progressive rock group has no umlauts in its name but released several albums with umlauts in the title, including Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh, Köhntarkösz, and Üdü Ẁüdü? (Hint: the band had so many weird titles because group leader Christian Vander created a fake alien language called Kobaïan for the band's lyrics.)
Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister was the member of two bands that played a major role in the history of musical umlauts. The first was a "space rock" band that wrote "YÖÜR ØÅPTÅIN IS DEA̋D" on the back cover of their 1971 album In Search of Space; the second was a pioneering speed metal band best known for "Bomber" and "Ace of Spades." Name BOTH bands.
Hüsker Dü, the first punk band to use an umlaut in its name, took its name from the title of a 1970s-era children's board game, which means the same thing in either Danish or Norwegian. What 3-word phrase best translates "Husker du?" into English?

The parody metal band Spinal Tap has an umlaut over the letter N, which appears in almost no human language. What language, the official language of Madagascar, is a rare exception to this rule?
What fictional member of Spinal Tap (not the actor who portrays him), with a surname that honors the patron saint of "quality footwear," said of the umlaut in his band's name? "It's like a pair of eyes. You're looking at the umlaut, and it's looking at you."
