THIS EVENT in 1911 killed 146 of its workers in the Asch Building. Having the fire exits blocked did not make things better.
On February 20, 2003, a fire broke out at a music venue called The Station in Rhode Island. The fire took place as THIS BAND was seven minutes into their set when an "egg crate" soundproofing caught fire during a pyrotechnics show. 100 people were killed.
The worst single building fire in the US took place at THIS THEATRE in Chicago. Over 600 people died when oil painted curtains and scenery caught fire and the fire safety components of the building did not work properly.
On July 6, 1944, a massive fire took place in Hartford, Connecticut, at THIS TYPE OF EVENT. Around 170 people died in the fire, mostly women and 100 children under the age of 15. This event was the impetus for similar events to move into more stable and less fire prone venues
On November 28, 1942, a fire broke out in THIS NIGHTCLUB in Boston, killing almost 1/2 of the 1,000 club goers in the building. Having a revolving door as an exit, other exits doors that opened in instead of out, and a lack of sprinklers did not help.
The worst hotel fire in US history was the Winecoff Hotel fire on December 7, 1946, in THIS CITY, known for a few other famous fires in its history. 119 people died in the fire. Having only one fire exit at one end of the building did not help.
The second worst hotel fire in the US was at the Dupont Plaza Hotel on New Year's Eve 1986 in THIS CITY. Almost 100 people died when disgruntled employees set fire to several Sterno cans in the main ballroom.
The third worst hotel fire in the US was THIS VEGAS CASINO/HOTEL, which caught fire on November 21, 1980 (the same day as Dallas' "Who Shot JR?" episode). 85 people died mostly from smoke inhalation. The casino (which has since changed names and moved down the Strip to a new location) did not have sprinklers since, as a casino, it was occupied 24 hours a day. That soon changed.
"The Towering Inferno," a 1974 disaster epic starring Paul Newman and Steve McQueen ,was produced by this "master of disaster" that brought you "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Swarm."
"The way you walk and talk really sets me off / To a fuller love, child, yes, it does, uh / The way you squeeze and tease, knocks to me my knees / 'Cause I'm smokin', baby, baby" These lyrics are from THIS BAND and their hit "Fire."
THIS THREE WORD PHRASE is shared by, among others: a poem by Marvin X about the Watts Riots of 1965, an episode of "The Simpsons" (with an s added at the end), and a phrase from a song by The Trammps in 1976.
In its simplest form, a fire cannot exist without the "triangle" of THESE THREE ITEMS.
Most household smoke detectors, especially the "ion chamber" variety, contain a very small amount of THIS ELEMENT. One gram of it can fill 5,000 detectors and it emits alpha particles of radiation, which create ions of oxygen and nitrogen in the detector. A small electrical charge (supplied by DC or AC power) usually catches these ions. But when smoke enters the detector, it absorbs the alpha particles, the ionization rate falls, and the electrical current dips, causing the alarm to sound.
