Founded as the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, from 1870-1932, almost all of their ships ended in "-ic." Their name came back in 1995 to name a service provided by another company that bought them out in the 1940s. (We need the company name before the merger).
From 1840-1934, all of their ships ended in "-ia." After 1934, their ships took on more regal names.
They once owned the fastest liner in the world (their namesake), but also had slower ships such as America, Independence and Constitution.
While most likely a coincidence, this company's name is the same as the short form of a Hebrew name meaning "my song." They are the only major container ship line based in Israel.
While mostly known for their ferry services, today they are owned by Dubai Ports World. Rudyard Kipling ended his poem "The Exiles" with a shoutout to this "Empire Line:" "So much and twice so much. We gird, but go. For all the soul of our sad East is there, Beneath the house-flag of the [BLANK]."
Founded in 1904 and headquartered in Denmark, this is the largest container ship company in the world. They gained some extra publicity when a 2013 film came out about an event that occurred to one of their ships four years earlier.
In 1972, this company began with one ship: the Mardi Gras. If they could see them now...they'd probably be embarrassed with the recent rash of mishaps involving their "Fun Ships."
They merged with their longtime rival North German Lloyd in 1970. Prior to WWI they had the largest ships with Vaterland, Bismarck and Imperator while twenty years later their St. Louis would make news for a far less then glamorous reason.
They began in 1972 with their first ship, the "Sun Viking." Today all 25 ships now end in the phrase "...of the Seas." They also used Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" in an ad campaign several years ago.
Founded in 1966, in 1979 they purchased the former SS France, converted her into a cruise liner and renamed her to reflect her new owners. Their ships now include those of "Sky," "Dawn," "Pearl," and "Gem" monikers.
In a 1993 ad campaign, Majestic Caribbean Cruises promised this NBA star would "be there" on all three of their ships...at the same time... (In case you don't get the reference, this was an SNL commercial spoof. The NBA star, though, was real and played for the 76ers when the "commercial" first aired.)
You see the ads for this shipping company all the time on TV, except they want to do a river cruise. Their name sounds like it is trying to court the Minnesota and Bergen demographic.
