Unlike most MTQs there is not a theme question, instead if you figure out the theme you can use it to solve the other questions.
Each answer is a person, you just need the surname to get credit even though it may not provide the theme connection.

This guy was inaugurated as U.S. President in the parlor of his childhood home. His father administered the oath of office.
This guy was organizing with the black members of a Tennessee trade union for sanitary workers at the time of his murder.
This guy was a "big" silent film star. In the early 1920s he was acquitted after a series of celebrity trials in which he was accused of the rape and manslaughter of Virginia Rappe.
This guy was a U.S. general during the Civil war, during which time he became hated in the south for his perceived tyranny as military governor of New Orleans. After the war, he was a staunch supporter of civil rights as a representative from and governor of Massachusetts.
This guy oversaw the defense of Alaska during World War II. When he was shot on Okinawa as a lieutenant general, he tied for the highest-ranking U.S. officer killed in action during the war. His father, who had the same name, was a C.S. Civil War general and later Governor of Kentucky.
This guy developed many non-edible products from the sweet potato. He is probably better known for his similar work with another plant.
This guy was the county commissioner, landowner, and all-around local bigwig that conflicted with Bo, Luke, Daisy, and the rest of their titular family.
This guy was Economics Minister to Hitler and President of the Reichsbank. He was tried at Nuremberg, but acquitted because of his lack of connection to war crimes or Nazi racial ideology (and presence of connections to the resistance.)
This guy was a Union general during the U.S. Civil War, during which he commanded on "Cemetary Ridge" during Gettysburg. As a Democrat, he lost the 1880 presidential election to his former colleague James Garfield.
This guy won 373 major league baseball games as a starting pitcher - tied for third on the all-time list. He mainly played for the Phillies and Cubs between 1911 and 1930, though his one World Series title was as a member of the 1926 Cardinals.
This guy was a Western Pennsylvania industrialist who worked closely with Andrew Carnegie and Andrew W. Mellon. After his death his art collection has been displayed as a museum in his New York City mansion.
This guy was a left-wing musician who hailed from the Midwest. While living in New York, he wrote the following about his landlord/the father of a presidential candidate:
I suppose
Old Man Trump knows
Just how much
Racial Hate
he stirred up
In the bloodpot of human hearts
When he drawed
That color line
Here at his
Eighteen hundred family project ....
