The #1 selling duet of 1965, it was written as a Husband & Wife's rebuttal to a Bob Dylan song of the previous year - would be featured on film as the wake-up alarm music in Groundhog Day, and would be re-released again in 1993 with the now divorced husband replaced by an animated teenager.
The lights are much brighter there. There are movie shows. Maybe you know some little places to go to where they never close.
The Beatles scored five #1s in 1965. Which one lends it's title to both an Album and Film released by the Band in the same year.
A single that failed in 1964 - this folk tune grew in popularity among college students in Boston - prompting its producer to issue a remix inspired by the Electric sound of "Like a Rolling Stone" without the knowledge of the artists who had recorded it in the first place. Hitting #1 in December, success of this song pushed the duo to reunite and release a similarly titled, hastily-recorded follow-up album.
This song was first case of an overall #1 single of the year never actually reaching #1 in any given week. Written by the Texan Domingo Samudio, this novelty dance tune was performed under his stage name while wearing Egyption costumes and features a killer Saxophone solo.
Proving that almost any Merseybeat song could be a hit, this failed tune from 1963 was re-released. Including five very short verses summarizing the singers commitment to stay for many a day say he loves you. And that's pretty much it. Also, it's accompanied by the entire band dancing like this:
How can Mary tell me what to do when she lost her love so true? And Flo, she don't know, 'cause the boy she loves is a Romeo
The singer of this song is very bothered by an interrupting guy who will give him five pounds if he's got a detergent pack, callers asking him why he's up at three in the morning, and the collection of parking tickets he receives after falling asleep in his car downtown.
Originating in the 1963 play "the Lads" the song features a teenage protagonist visiting his ex-girlfriends mother, and asking her to tell the girl to keep the things he'd bought her and not say she broke his heart.
"You're old enough to kill but not for votin' You don't believe in war but whats that gun you're totin'?"
The first song with Al Jardine on lead vocal, it was not intended to be a single. When the song developed a following on radio, it was re-recorded at a higher tempo with slight lyric alterations. The subject, getting over a break-up, hadn't changed.
It doesn't mean what it did before. It's genuine like love should be .It can mean something beautiful. It can be dreams that are coming true. So if you've got someone whose love is true, let it shine for you
