The singer of this song is very bothered by an interrupting guy who will give him five pounds if he's got a detergent pack, callers asking him why he's up at three in the morning, and the collection of parking tickets he receives after falling asleep in his car downtown.

Originating in the 1963 play "the Lads" the song features a teenage protagonist visiting his ex-girlfriends mother, and asking her to tell the girl to keep the things he'd bought her and not say she broke his heart.
