The Illinois state capitol underwent a renovation in 2011 that saw the addition of staircase lamp posts shaped like women holding up the lamps. This is particularly notable because the lamp posts were in the original design but deemed too risqué by state legislators in the 1870s. George R. Mann's original design for the Montana state capitol was eventually rejected as being too costly. It was later selected as the basic design for this other state's capitol - which took sixteen years to complete, overseen by George W. This American architect gained national fame for his design of the Minnesota state capitol. He later designed the West Virginia capitol as well as notable skyscrapers including the New York Life and Woolworth Buildings in New York City.

He finished his term as governor despite being elected to the Senate in the fall of 1930, in part as a way to ensure that the new state capitol building's completion was not derailed by political opponents. On July 10, 2015, after years of controversy, the Confederate flag was finally removed from the South Carolina statehouse grounds. Much more quietly, the flag had also been removed from a memorial on the grounds of this state's capitol - which once served as the Confederate capitol - on June 24, 2015, after the state's governor, finding that (unlike in South Carolina) there was no law requiring the flag to stay up, ordered its removal.
