In an attempt to deny the presidency to this Democratic candidate, the Whig Party ran WHH as their candidate in all of the "free" states except Massachusetts, while Hugh L. White ran in the remaining slave states except South Carolina. The plan failed (though a swing of 4,000 votes in Pennsylvania to WHH would have thrown the election to the House.)
