The Battle of the Somme was one of the deadliest of all time (Wikipedia describes the result as "inconclusive", which I think means everyone lost.) This was partly due to French forces being pulled away to defend what small city in the Department of Meuse, which the German army attacked in early 1916 to draw the French into a battle on favorable terrain?
