All of the snakes identified as cobras are in the family Elapidae. While representatives of this family can be found on all continents, only two species are found in the United States, both of which are known by the same common name. Identify this shy, but otherwise dangerous snake, the eastern variety of which is sometimes called the "American cobra", and which is the subject of a Southern children's rhyme used to teach kids the difference between the dangerous snake and a harmless mimic.
