La Marseillaise is often described as having been born out of the French Revolution, but more specifically, it was written to rally French troops against an invasion which attempted to quash the French Revolution. What name is generally given to this war which saw France have to fight against the Holy Roman Empire, Britain, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, and various Italian states including Sardinia and Naples. The war generally ran form 1792-97, and despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the French repelled the invasions. Notably, an attack on Sardinia, the Battle of Saorgio, was the first planned attack in the long career of future general/emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte.
