"Vol de Nuit," or "Night Flight," is a 1931 novel about an airmail pilot, Fabien, who is obliged to fly through bad weather and by the end of the novel is almost certain to have died. The novel took on a layer of grim significance in 1944 when its author, who would become better known for another book published a year before his death, disappeared on a military reconnaissance flight out of Corsica; his plane was not recovered until 2003.
