A Robert Williams painting lends its name to this album… deemed to gruesome to display on the cover, it was placed inside and replaced with now-iconic album art representing the individual band members.
Partly written as solo tracks before the band formed, the twelve songs were grouped into two thematic halves. Initially considered a flop, this album reached #1 on the Billboard charts in August 1988, 57 weeks after its release.
