Vegetarian Foods Named After Animals by ShapiroA

Question 6

The original name of this fondue-like dish from the British Isles referred directly to an animal (somewhat nonsensically, as no animal appears in the recipe). However, an altered form of the name with a spurious etymology sprung up soon after, prompting Ambrose Bierce to "solemnly explain" to the would-be rationalizers of English that "toad in the hole is really not a toad, and ris de veau à la financière is not the smile of a calf prepared after the recipe of a she-banker".
