The borders of this modern nation are roughly that of the last surviving khanate which descended from the Golden Horde, a khanate which lasted well into the 19th century before being assimilated into the Russian Empire. While independent since late 1991, about 6,000 square kilometers which make up the Baikonur Cosmodrome are still leased by Russia.
