Willow Run Airport and Bomber Plant (which was split between Wayne County and Washtenaw County, in part due to property tax assessments) became the embodiment of "the Arsenal of Democracy" by producing 8,685 of these heavy bombers in three years. These bombers are best known for their low-level strike against the Ploiești oil fields in Romania in 1943.
