He was appointed a Deputy US Marshal by Theodore Roosevelt in 1905, years removed from his days as a Wild West gunfighter and sheriff, but was fired by President Taft in 1909 and returned to his last career as a boxing reporter. What lawman and journalist was also the subject of an NBC television series from 1958 to 1961 and was played by Tom Sizemore in the film “Wyatt Earp?”
