March 27, 1977 was aviation’s darkest day before September 11, 2001. Flight 4805, a 747 on a takeoff roll, collided with flight 1736, another 747 which was taxiing in the opposite direction down the same, foggy runway in Tenerife, Canary Islands, killing 583 people. All 248 people aboard the aircraft attempting to take off were killed, along with 335 people aboard the taxiing aircraft. 61 people on the struck aircraft, including the three members of the flight crew, survived.
